Why Do Garage Floors Crack?

Garage floors cracking is simply an inevitability Concrete is not a ductile material, which simply means that when it stretches and bends it also breaks. However, it does shrink and expand with the fluctuating temperatures, but this leads to potential cracking.

Many concrete floors need to be built with contraction joints that are built into the slab. This is what leads to the cracking. These joints are typically deep grooves or saw cut joints that you see in the concrete that appear to divide the garage floor into separate slabs. But what happens then is that these grooves create a weakened line in the concrete, which leads to the crack to follow along with the groove instead of occurring across the entire surface. It is essentially a safety measure to allow for the cracking to occur is stops that are less troublesome.

Cracks do occur in other parts of the concrete as well. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as how the earth settles under the slab, curing issues, or other variables beyond your control. Fortunately, many of the cracks that occur are not structural in nature, but merely an aesthetic issue. They can easily be repaired by our quality garage flooring products.
