What Is Coal Tar Epoxy?
Coal tar epoxy is a black surface protection polymer for use on extremely corrosive environment surfaces. It is simply a blend of various epoxy resins and coal tar. Many commonly use the epoxy to make high solids coatings or paints to provide moisture protection for underground systems. Pipelines, water treatment facilities, clarifiers, tanks are examples of that protection. It is common for use within the sewage industry for those reasons.
Coal tar epoxy is made by the conversion of polyamide epoxy with a pitch of refined coal tar. It is mostly used on metal substrates and concrete in offshore, petroleum and industrial environments. The fluctuation of temperatures can make the product crystallize. However, it is stable at room temperature or at least 5°F above dew point. When you apply it, the environmental conditions may affect the drying time.
Coal tar epoxy is a type of epoxy that is heavy-duty and high-build. Frequently used on surfaces, it is an epoxy that is subjected to extremely corrosive environments. Here are some of the features that make up the material:
- It is a blend of various resins and coal that then creates a protective coating for whatever material it is used on.
- It provides an excellent protective barrier coating on surfaces such as steel, iron and concrete.
- The tar additive is excellent at sealing out moisture and boosts flex and elongation of the concrete and tar.
- It holds up well in many marine environments and can withstand saltwater immersion.
It is also a great choice for coating metals in order to prevent rust and corrosion from occurring. This go for metal hulls, trailer, truck beds and much more. Barge hulls, underground tanks, and non-potable water tanks commonly use it. Coal tar epoxy can be top-coated with regular paints as well! There are different types of paints used, such as two-component paint, three-component paint, and so on.
